Insomnia, Evening Arousal, and the Struggle to Sleep
A session map for exploring sleep effort, evening activation, unfinished tasks, routines, and referral needs without promising immediate sleep.
Criteria, checks, and next step
01
Sleep pattern
Map timing and variability.
- What are the usual sleep and wake times?
- What happens on difficult nights and the following day?
02
Arousal cycle
Identify effort and monitoring.
- How does the client try to make sleep happen?
- What does clock-watching or extending time in bed do to anxiety?
03
Evening transition
Find realistic cues for ending the day.
- Which tasks or worries stay mentally open?
- What low-stimulation routine could be repeated?
04
Support plan
Define treatment and safety needs.
- Would structured CBT-I or medical evaluation be appropriate?
- What small change can be tested for one week?
Summary
Reduce the decision to a few points
- Keep wake time reasonably consistent.
- Track only variables that support decisions.
- Refer when breathing, movement, mood, or medication concerns are present.
